Uncorked Ears

Poetry view from above of a forest in autumn foliage

how is it one word from you
sends me spinning into an abyss
one word and it
has me bracing for impact
the sound of your footsteps approaching
has my shoulders raised to my ears
a barricade my body self creates
my insides roiling into a cool puddled mess
as I float away to neverland
where an unkind tone, touch or sound
will never reach me
I left my ears uncorked on the lap
of the body I have left behind
Away I go
Away I go
If I could
I would never turn back
