Stone

A sharp jab into my heelβ€”
I pull off my boot hissing
and shake out
a grey stone, unassuming,
one of many, and yet
I look and I look
turning it over and over
one sharp edge to another
and it spoke in face after face
of calcified hardness
till it wore mine and said,
β€œYou will find
no friend in me.”

  1. So many sharp jabs we have to meet every day… (for stones in your shoes I recommend gaiters)

  2. I love the personification of the stone, Rafia. You captured its hardness in the β€˜calcified hardness’ and its hard words.

  3. They say water wears the edges from stone, but if we are the water the stone wears us away… Potent poem, Rafia.

  4. Ouch specially when it becomes: calcified hardness. Sometimes it is those little things or stones that snaps us to anger. Thanks for joining in! Nice to meet you (and read your poem).

  6. Perhaps we shouldn’t expect to find sweetness and light everywhere. We have difficulty accepting things as they are. Good one.

  7. Rafia, your poem is a powerful exploration of self-discovery, capturing the metaphorical weight of unexpected hardness within. The imagery is vivid, and the concise verses carry profound introspection. A beautifully crafted piece! πŸŒŸπŸ“œ

  8. I love the layers I can conjure up with this. The stone could be you, and it’s in your shoe. We create our own pain sometimes. The lack of a friend while it wears your face. Sometimes we are our only friends. Sometimes not. Lots to think about.πŸ™πŸ»β€οΈ
